Ascorbic Acid Injection

Ascorbic Acid Injection

Ascorbic acid injection is used to treat scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency) in patients who cannot take the medicine by mouth.

Ascorbic Acid Injection is a clear, colorless solution of vitamin C for intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous use. Let’s explore its details:

  • Description: Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin. It occurs as a white or slightly yellow crystal or powder with a light acidic taste. In the dry state, it is reasonably stable in air, but in solution, it rapidly oxidizes. Ascorbic Acid is freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in alcohol, and insoluble in chloroform, ether, and benzene. The chemical name of Ascorbic Acid is L-ascorbic acid. The molecular formula is C₆H₈O₆, and the molecular weight is 176.13. Ascorbic Acid injection is a sterile solution of Ascorbic Acid in Water for Injection, adjusted to a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0. It contains no preservatives.

  • Uses:

    • Scurvy Treatment: Ascorbic acid deficiency results in scurvy. Collagenous structures are primarily affected, and lesions develop in bones and blood vessels. Administration of ascorbic acid completely reverses the symptoms of ascorbic acid deficiency.
    • Wound Healing: Ascorbic acid is involved in tissue repair and collagen formulation.
    • Increased Need: Febrile states, chronic illness, infections, hemovascular disorders, burns, delayed fracture, and wound healing are indications for an increase in daily ascorbic acid intake.
  • Dosage and Administration: Ascorbic Acid Injection is typically used for short-term treatment (up to 1 week). It should be given by or under the direct supervision of a doctor.
