Acetylcysteine injection is an antidote used to prevent or lessen hepatic injury after ingestion of a potentially hepatotoxic quantity of acetaminophen. It is particularly important in cases of acute ingestion or repeated supratherapeutic ingestion (RSI) of acetaminophen1. When someone has taken a potentially harmful amount of paracetamol (acetaminophen), acetylcysteine helps protect the liver from damage caused by high levels of paracetamol2.
